SENIOR CAT CARE
Preventative exams for your senior cat will prevent conditions and diseases that are common during the later years in life such as bone and joint problems, hormone disorders, cancer, and diseases of the kidney, heart, and liver. At Deason Animal Hospital, we recommend bi-annual preventative exams for senior cats to look for any potential underlying conditions. During the senior preventative exam, your cat will receive:
- A thorough physical examination
- A detailed dental evaluation
- Tailored vaccinations
- Comprehensive diagnostic testing
- Parasite testing and prevention
- Heartworm testing and prevention
- Nutrition and diet counseling
- Behavioral evaluation and counseling
During your cat’s senior preventative exam, our veterinarians will sit down with you to discuss symptoms of age-related changes that your cat may be experiencing, as well as any concerns you have about his or her overall health. We can provide you with advice on nutrition, exercise, mobility, and noticeable changes in your pet’s lifestyle.
Signs to Watch For in Your Senior Cat
Because cats age more quickly than people, dramatic changes in health can occur in as little as three to six months. The following symptoms could indicate a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible:
- Sudden weight loss or weight gain
- Significant decrease or increase in appetite
- Failure to eat for more than two days
- Lethargy
- Decrease in vision
- Excessive panting
- Hair loss, especially if accompanied by scratching in a localized area
- Seizures or convulsing
